Winter 2009 British Columbia Snowpack

This week we had a cold snap with a light dusting of snow.

It stuck on the ground long enough for a few good shots against the clearing sky.

A March 11 bulletin from the British Columbia Ministry of Environment states that the snowpack for the South Coast is well below normal (63%). Peak snow accumulation will be over by mid-April, so there isn't much time left.

That doesn't bode well for river and lake levels this summer. Right now, Powell Lake is almost at it's lowest level since our arrival in 2001, and it's only March.

Low water input combined with high water extraction for electrical generation is going to make it difficult for many float cabin owners. Our cabin is in 80' of water, but others have much less depth to work with. Unfortunately, beached floats can be easily damaged. -- Margy

Still beautiful, even with low snow. Nothing like the West Coast! (Thanks for your visit and comment!)

    Nice work.

We have low lake levels here in Texas also even though we have received some much needed rain this week.

  12. Margy: these photos make me drool with envy. I'm from the high desert (surrounded by mountains) in Eastern California, but have lived in flat prairie Texas for the last 30 years. Next time I visit my son in Seattle, I'm headed up to BC for the real stuff. Thanks for making my Friday!

  13. We drove from Vancouver to Whistler and you have the most wonderful sceneries around. I want to go back and explore some more.

Your photos make me long for BC.

  14. Beautiful.. your photos are quite stunning and it is a shame about the snowpack and quite a concern for the upcoming summer season.

  15. Beautiful photos. Art was busy this week loosening the cables at the cabin as they were getting very tight with the lower water level. He is a bit concerned about the water lever because the depth behind our cabin is now at 12 ft, not sure what we will do if it gets lower...lots of rain in the forecast hope that helps.
