Skytrails

Our float cabin on Powell Lake is under the flight path of jetliners heading to and from Vancouver International Airport. Contrails are linear clouds that are formed in the wakes of airplanes at high altitude.

This is the beginning of the contrail over the northwest horizon.

This is the end of the contrail over the southeast horizon, where the plane is already descending for YVR. High altitude winds have started to blow out this very long man made cloud. I wonder where the plane was coming from? Alaska, Bejing, Hong Kong, Japan? From the northwest there are lots of possibilities. I hope the passengers enjoy their visit. -- Margy

  1. Can you hear the jets at all? Or are they too high. I use to live within 15 miles of Seattle international airport. It wasn't fun. Don't miss that sound one bit!

  4. Heather - Yes, if you are listening very carefully you can hear the jets, but where we are they are still up about 10,000 feet.

    Thanks Halcyon

Busted! Yes Paul, from last summer.

  5. Left to my own devices, I wouldn't have thought you'd be on YVR's flight path, but of course, Alaska, Beijing, etc. — we probably flew over your lake when we flew to China. Who knew?
    Nice shots of the contrails.

  6. If you look on FlightAware you can see where planes are coming from and heading to. I had to look it up to make sure my guesses were right. Click here for FlightAware. - Margy

  9. With the weather we have been having, I had the same thoughts thinking it was a summer time shot. Nice captures by the way.
