Summer Sailing on Powell Lake

Blue summer skies and light winds are perfect for Wayne and I to go out in our 19' O'Day Mariner.

We are teaching ourselves to sail, carefully.

Large open areas on Powell Lake make that possible. On this day we practiced tacking into the wind to cross the area we call the North Sea. You wouldn't want to be out there in a little boat in a big storm.

Sailing downwind back through First Narrows we got to practice a little "wing on wing" with the jib and main sail on opposite sides.

Are you a sailor? How did you learn?

Do you wish you could sail? Look for lessons available in your area. Here the Powell River Yacht Club offers lessons for children and adults. They also offer introductory rides on occasion. Watch their Facebook page for upcoming events. If you live elsewhere, check with your local clubs to see what they might have to offer. -- Margy

  1. I used to sail my dad's wee boat. I loved it. So did my dad. We bought it used from my uncle who was upscaling to one-up his son!

    1. Wayne had one of those little laser sailboats first, but it kept tipping over with a small keel and big sail. This one has a fixed keep and is quite stable in the water. That's the part I like. - Margy

  2. Teaching yourself to sail, awesome! I took a few sailing lessons on a lake. All I could do was make that boat turn in circles. It was frustrating, but hilarious to remember. Happy Sailing!

  4. Good for you teaching yourselves to sail. I always wanted to but kept joining the kayak and canoe club instead. A beautiful lake and good luck, be safe.

    1. We also do kayaking, but I've never been in a canoe. We have a canoe route that includes our lake and a string of smaller lakes in the region. - Margy

  5. There’s a very active sailing club in Crescent Beach and the weather by the water is often sailor-friendly and breezy. But like you I wouldn’t want to be out anywhere when it’s stormy. Looks like it was a lovely day when you went out and no smoky skies.

    1. Our sailing club moved their training boats out of our lake and to the ocean. Our winds are pretty unpredictable on direction and strength. - Margy

  6. Congrats on daring to learn this new skill!! Have never wanted to learn to sail, but the beautiful blue water and sky you show might change my mind!! Gorgeous. I do also like the idea that it would be blissfully quiet!!

  7. We used to live on Fern Ridge Lake West of Eugene (toward the coast); it's a man-made lake, but a major sailing destination in the summer!! It's beautiful to watch the regattas.
