This year, our Barn Swallows arrived in early May, but didn't start nest building until last week. We have an old nest under the peak of our roof that's been used since 2002, but this year, the pair wanted to build a nest under the porch. That would have been terrible, so we discouraged them by stuffing the nooks and crannies with newspaper.
After a few days, we saw them starting a nest at the back of the cabin. It isn't a perfect spot, but we didn't want to delay their nest building any longer. Bert IV and his Lovely Lady are working hard to get the job done so they can start their family.
Each time they fly in with a beak full of mud or grass, the nest gets larger. Because it's lower than the peak of the roof, I'll be able to get even better pictures as the summer progresses.
When we get back to the cabin this weekend, we expect to see a finished nest with Lovely Lady sitting on her eggs, and Bert IV singing her praises from his swim ladder perch. -- Margy
Aw so cute! They do have a knack of building their nests in the strangest places.
ReplyDeleteIt will be exciting to see how they get on this weekend. Great to watch their progress. Are you brave enough to cross the bridge today with me? Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteAwww adorable.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to come in to see follow ups
I have never minded swallows except the mess they make if they build in the wrong spot. I am going through 8 cups of birdseed a week right now with all the Gold finches, house finches and a Red winged black bird and his wife that have claimed my feeder as their own.
ReplyDeleteI always love to see where birds will build their nests ~ sometimes in the strangest places ~ Great photo shots for CC ~ Happy Weekend ~

Wonderful, hopeful the family paning works.
ReplyDeleteGood to see they found a safe place to hopefully start another family.
ReplyDeletei love swallows (and all of their bug-eating) but they do make a heckuva mess when nesting! :)
ReplyDeleteI really, really love to see swallows. So neat to have them nesting on your property. I'll be looking forward to the food deliveries when the eggs hatch!
ReplyDeleteThe Barn Swallows are so cute! Great series of photos. They are a great bird to have around, eating all the bugs.. Thank you for linking up to my critter party. Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat last shot is just darling!
ReplyDeleteLove that last photo. Our swallows built a nest one year under the eaves - and every time Don would walk in the back yard they would fuss and fret and then dive at him. They never bothered me - we can't figure that out.
ReplyDeleteOh, Margy, I'm so glad they finally got around to nesting. Maybe the air temperature influences their decision?
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm looking forward to the photos I know you will take.
