I waited until my last morning at the cabin to head down the lake for Powell River and my waiting Pacific Coastal Airlines flight. The low pressure weather system moved through the night before, making the lake safe to navigate once again.
It also cleared the skies. As I drove along Marine Avenue through the Townsite, I glimpsed this view of the Catalyst paper mill under a crisp blue sky. You may not think it's a beautiful sight, but it is something that grows on you. If it weren't for the mill, Powell River would not have been founded as the vibrant coastal town it is. -- Margy
If it weren't for making paper, Powell River might not exist. When I was just a little kid, I knew that was the place newsprint was made.
ReplyDeleteI love your shot of the sky, the clouds, the water and the mill. It's great!

I'm grew up in a mill town as well, and even worked in the paper mill in my younger years. Were it not for these mills, many towns on the Island would not be as prosperous as they are today. The mill owners provided funds for so many recreational venues, along with hospitals, etc.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great picture and that mill has a beauty all its own!
ReplyDeleteKay and Marion - You are both right. Without the mill Powell River might never have been established. There are lots of new residents that don't like the mill, but I think it has a lot of character and interesting history.
ReplyDeleteYes, Cheryl, it does have a beauty of its own. It was called the White City in the early days. When the coastal boats would arrive at night, the mill and town were always lit up thanks to the power generated by the dam on Powell River. The mill is having a hard time economically for a variety of reasons. I hope it survives and remains a vibrant part of my home town.
