What I Found

Wayne and I left Bellingham at 10:00 a.m. so I could catch the Pacific Coastal flight from the South Terminal at Vancouver Airport to Powell River. Twenty minutes later I was on final approach for a pretty emotional homecoming. I drove straight to the Shinglemill Marina and was up the lake and in my cabin by 2:00 p.m. Sometimes I forget how easy it is to get from one place to another.

I immediately did a walk around the decks and out to the garden. It was almost like I had only been gone overnight rather than four months. And thanks to Wayne, everything was ready for me to enjoy three days of relaxation.

Yes, my garden needed work, but Wayne had helped by cutting down my asparagus last fall. My strawberries were still okay. Their dead leaves were acting like a natural mulch. My carrots, chard and a bit of spinach were doing so well I decided to leave them in at least for now. Only the woody beets had to go.

I didn't see any birds or squirrels, but I put out some seeds and peanuts just in case. Then this morning I woke to a surprising snow storm. A beautiful way to end the short stay in my little home up the lake. Thank you to Dave and Marg for a lovely dinner back in town. And thank you Jeanne and Wayne for making my whole trip possible. -- Margy

  1. Oh, Margy...I can feel your excitement on your homecoming from your last two posts. How wonderful that you are home at your cabin on the lake. By the photos, it looks like it's in good shape!

I'll be looking forward to hearing your lovely stories about life on the lake, even if it's winter! I think the weather is supposed to be mild for the next few days, at least!

    Enjoy your homecoming!!!

  2. Wow, Margy, imagine your garden still having edible vegetables in it! Wouldn't happen out here in The Deep Freeze where I live.
Everything at the lake looks so pretty with a skiff of snow on it.
Lovely for you to have a little holiday at the lake!

  3. Isn't lovely to come 'home', especially when the garden is still producing for you. How lucky, have a wonderful weekend xxx

  4. Marion, Kay and Fran - Thanks for stopping by and commenting. It has been a wonderful, but way too short three day trip. I've packed a lot in, but it is over way too soon. I leave today on the 1:00 plane just 72 hours after I arrived, but boy did I pack a lot of cabin life into two of them. If I could have trusted the weather more I could have stayed up at Hole in the Wall another night. But a night in town with friends was fun too. - Margy

  5. Wow, Margy.
Every time I see one of your photos and read of your time up at Powell Lake, I remember why I love the BC coast so much. With this post, you've given us two great photos. I love the aerial photo and the cabin photo!

I was in Vancouver, Bellingham, and Seattle in October, and I truly wish I had more time to spend in the area, including up around Powell River.

    All the best,

    Wil

  6. Please forgive me if I add that my newest book, Aiden's Arrival: Honor Before Gold, published on January 1, 2011, is partially set in Vancouver and Whistler, at last year's Winter Games.

  7. Hey Wil - thanks for the nice comments. Good for you with a new book. I'll look it up online. Wayne is going to the Seattle Boat Show this week to do a book signing for two days. Should be lots of fun, but I have to stay home unfortunately. - Margy

  8. Hmmm… It's been a while since I went to a boat show. Used to go with my grandfather to the ones in Vancouver and Seattle. He was the reason I first started spending time on a boat up in Desolation Sound, when I crewed for him as a boy. I might get a little nostalgic here, if I'm not careful. Your posts really bring back a lot of those great times.

Anyway, Margy, if you do look up Aiden's Arrival: Honor Before Gold on Smashwords http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/35500

  9. So glad that you were able to make a trip to your cabin. Although short, I am sure it helped to recharge your mental batteries and create dreams for the future.

We were in Seattle over the weekend to judge at the Australia Day BBQ Competition at Seattle Center. Wish we would have had time to go to the boat show and meet Wayne!

  10. Hi, Margy! Neat post. For some reason, I was thinking you lived at the cabin year round, but that might be a little hard! Better to save it for the fun getaways...

  11. Good to hear from you Diane. We try to be at our cabin as much as possible. Right now I am caring for my mother down in Bellingham after back surgery. Wayne gets there more now than I do. This post was about my first trip home after almost four months away. It was wonderful. From here on I hope to get back one week every month. - Margy
