The Beach Hut

When Wayne and I discovered Powell River in 2000, we stayed at the Willingdon Beach Campsite. Their motto is "Paradise by the Sea" and it truly is. For years we traveled and camped by airplane with a pattern of no more than two nights per destination. Powell River changed all that. That first year we camped for two weeks with Willingdon Beach as our home base for exploration of the Powell River area. At $17.50 for tents and $24.00 for full hookups, it is a great travel bargain. Campsites range from waterfront to forest to grassy meadow.

One advantage of Willingdon Beach is its location at the edge town close to the quaint shops of Marine Avenue. Stand looking in one direction and there's mature forest and unspoiled shoreline. Turn around and within easy walking distance is the Willingdon Beach park (site to many events and festivals year-round), the Willingdon Beach Trail, Powell River Historical Museum, Powell River Forestry Museum, Putters Mini Golf and of course The Beach Hut.

Each spring we look forward to the opening of The Beach Hut on Highway 101. In recent years, it has changed hands several times, but it has always served good food with an excellent view. We like to stop by for a quick dinner before heading up the lake or for an ice cream cone when we return to town. They have an excellent selection hard ice cream flavours and soft serve. Come visit my town, and don't forget for a stop at The Beach Hut for a tasty treat. - Margy
